Middlesex Memories

Middlesex Memories

An exhibition of photographs by Carole Rawlinson
This exhibition provides a snapshot in time of this well loved teaching hospital as it went out of use as a major healthcare facility at the end of 2005.

It links images of parts of the Middlesex Hospital building to people's memories of the hospital at particular points in their lives as staff or patients.

The photographs were taken between August and November 2005 as the Middlesex was vacated by patients but still retained its healthcare characteristics.

Avril Harris

Avril Harris

Exhibition
From 1st May until the end of October an exhibition of photographs by Avril R. Harris at 'Ilios', Ag. Georgios/Pagi, Corfu, Greece.
Having spent time in the area over the last 10 years and photographed in the villages and by the sea I have become known to many of the local people and was asked if I would like to have an exhibition in a well-respected jewellery workshop. They specialize in using natural objects for the jewellery often casting them in silver or gold so their work and my pictures have a common theme.

The Unpromising Landscape

The Unpromising Landscape

Exhibition
The Photographic Images of:- Trevor Crone, Roy King FRPS and Dave Mason

For most people the word 'landscape' brings to mind areas of natural beauty. The South Downs, the Lake District or perhaps the Highlands of Scotland are places that would readily support this point of view. Yet much of the land we inhabit today is not like this. Creeping industrialisation and urban living has drastically changed our perception of the world we see around us. For many people the view from the end of the street , from the edge of town or even some rural areas would not be what they concider landscape. It is these places that the three photographers within this exhibition source their images. The more ordinary and mundane places.

Journeys : The art of making

Exhibition
Three photographs of LIP Member Yoke Matze were selected for the Susses Barn Gallery annual West Dean College tutors' exhibition at West Dean.

An exhibition showcasing the work of tutors teaching on short courses at West Dean College and includes paintings, drawings, sculpture, jewellery, glass, photography, pottery and textiles with artist-in-residence Cas Holmes demonstrating her lively and experimental textile and paper-based techniques.

The exhibition seeks to explore the many facets of artistic journeys and focuses on the way these influence the work of the artist. "From the more conventional notion of journey as one based on travel, to those of process and self-discovery, each piece acknowledges the fact that every creative work begins with a journey," said curator Dr Sharon Kusunoki.

Fibre-based photographers

Fibre-based photographers

Exhibition
LIP members, Bea Lopez and Susana Varela are exhibiting as part of a group of fibre-based photographers at The Camera Club, Kennington.

This is an interesting exhibition as it brings together for the first time a "hard-core" group of darkroom photographic printing students that used to be under the tutorship of an experimental fibre-based printer at the London College of Communication, Elephant & Castle, who is himself exhibiting in this exhibtion.

Bea Lopez writes:
For the past 5 years, with steely determination, we set ourselves a goal: to give up our Saturdays and cross over to the dark side!

From dawn 'til dusk (well almost), in a dim recess of Elephant & Castle, brains and cultures fused with fervour and we began to write our stories.

Now, in the brightness of a July evening, the time has come for those stories to be told. See for yourselves the fruits of our collective labour, and share in the endless pleasure that working with fibre-based paper brings.

It's time to read the landscape, the portrait and the still life and to witness the eternal duel that is highlight versus shadow. Come, share in our journey and in our passion.

Seven Photographers

Seven Photographers

Exhibition
SEVEN PHOTOGRAPHERS is a photographic exhibition at the Croydon Clocktower, Katharine Street, Croydon CR9 1ET, from 31 May - 24 July 2006.

Photographers Carol Hudson, David Malarkey, Peter Marshall, Tony Mayne, Len Salem, Sam Tanner and Fred Whisker have been meeting together regularly for around ten years, since 2002 in Thornton Heath. Each brings his work to the meetings to be commented on and criticised by the others, sharing knowledge and ideas and providing support. Over that time each has taken part in many group and solo shows but this is the first time they have shown their work as a group.

This group is part of a wider London-based photographic organisation, London Independent Photography (LIP), with other similar groups elsewhere in London as well as a number of central meetings and workshops.

The photographers in this show include amateurs and professionals and have a wide range of interests and very diverse approaches to photography. The show includes images taken on the streets of London, dramatic modern dance photography, still-life and more. Technically the work ranges from pre-photographic imaging techniques through 'traditional' film and printing to cutting edge digital capture and state of the art digital output.

John H Rhodes: Beyond the Obvious

John H Rhodes: Beyond the Obvious

Exhibition
Photographs from the Scottish Highlands
Photographer John H Rhodes presents his one man exhibition Beyond the Obvious: Photographs from the Scottish Highlands at The Dissenters' Gallery, Kensal Green Cemetery, London W10 from Saturday June 3 until Sunday June 25, 2006.

About the exhibition
My images are a celebration of Nature's processes within which man was once an integral part, but has now only an uneasy relationship. The exhibition comprises approximately thirty large images taken over recent years mainly detailing the depth of beauty which can be found in the Sutherland landscape of Scotland.
"In Nature man was evolved progressing from a sea bound to an earthbound creature. Yet man, having turned his back on Nature, destroys rather than nurtures her. Modern man sees only the bright colours, the more obvious visible delights of Nature. Few look beyond the obvious or see the relationships between the myriad elements, which make such complex yet beautiful visual structures of colour and form. Move the tripod a foot this way or that, return in an hour, a day, a week, a month or a year and all is changed. Constantly re-arranging herself Nature never rests."

Angela Inglis: Catching St Pancras

Angela Inglis: Catching St Pancras

Exhibition
The exhibition is a photographic record of the transition of St. Pancras International Station and surrounding railway buildings from the magnificent arched roof which Barlow designed and built in 1866/1868 to the thrusting domestic & international terminal ready for 2007.

We are reminded of the relocation of the Water Tower, the beauty of the old St. Pancras Railway Bridge, the magical quality of the Coal Drop Arches, the embellishment of Gasholder 8, the skill of 21st engineering, the moment when the new rails were laid, the architectural excellence of the Gymnasium, and the extraordinary evening light over King's Cross reminiscent of Dutch paintings.

Entrance is free. A catalogue is available to borrow from the desk. If you would like to visit when Angela Inglis is there please telephone 020 7387 9644 and arrange a time or email angelainglis@blueyonder.co.uk. Information about past exhibitions can be found on www.angelainglis.org

Peter Herbert: IDENTIKITSCH

Peter Herbert: IDENTIKITSCH

IDENTIKITSCH is an exhibition of photographs by Peter Herbert involving themes of identification and identity. Styles of photography are loosely connected, ranging from documentary reportage to carefully composed imagery over a varied range of subjects. These include the body, advertising, objects and the environment. The eye of the photographer is however constantly finding joy and beauty as well as alienation and loneliness in scenes of everyday life at its most playful and extraordinary.

Many of the images reflect photographic ideas of “the decisive moment” made popular by the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. Whether it is Buddhist monks enjoying ice-cream on the South Bank, a naked buttock exposed on a train full of silent commuters or gay Muslims exhausted at the end of an emotion packed Pride event, these are images designed to amuse, stimulate and provoke.
