Group Show: Marrakesh and Mountains – Land of the Berbers

A group show featuring five photographers’ responses to a journey from Marrakesh to the High Atlas Mountains. The trip, which was led by a local Berber guide, provided an extraordinary insight into the varied people, architecture, landscape and way of life in this beautiful and fascinating country. It also provided a better understanding of the Berber people, and gave an insight into historical and current issues within Moroccan society.

Marrakesh proved a rich source of photographic opportunities: from the beautiful Jardin Majorelle, the peaceful Medersa Ben Youssef to the chaotic and lively Place Djemaa El Fnaa and the souk. Travelling within the Atlas Mountains allowed exploration of beautiful valleys, lakes, gorges, high passes, extraordinary rock formations, remote villages, markets and spectacular ancient kasbahs. It was also an opportunity to observe the way of life of the local people, which is slowly changing but remains traditional in some areas.

All the artists have different concerns, methods, outlooks and photographic approaches, reflecting the richness and diversity of contemporary photography:

Pete Webster responded to the photographic challenge of the environment by striving for a different approach to traditional travel imagery. He focussed on often overlooked aspects of day to day life and
    objects.

Mary Pritchard experiments with a variety of cameras and is interested in trying to give a different ‘take’ on landscape and travel photography and aims to produce images which evoke an emotional response.

Sabine Thoele was able to further her passion and talent for street photography and developed a new interest in capturing landscapes.

Michael Colley works exclusively with black and white film and produces all his own hand-crafted prints using traditional darkroom methods. He has been photographing this area of southern Morocco for several years.
