Cultivating an aspirational consumerism and tapping into the wealth of the affluent urban population is now a key feature of China’s economic development. This work is part of a larger project that looks at the remodeling of Chinese cities into hubs of commerce.
The photos peek through the commercial hoardings of demolition and construction sites, giving a complex composition of visual elements – the blurred impressions of image and display in the foreground, tightly cropping the crisp detail and distance of the real scenes beyond.
