24th Annual Exhibition - First Round Selections
16-28 OCTOBER, 2012
THE STRAND GALLERY (formerly Proud Central)
32 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6BP
Dear London Independent Photography Members,
Thank you very much for your entries to the 24th Annual Exhibition. We had an excellent response this year with 741 prints entered from 151 LIP members which is great, given the changes we made to streamline the process with the introduction of an initial electronic submission round.
To those members who have not had images requested for the second print selection round, I would like to personally thank you very much for entering. It can be disheartening, I know from personal experience as someone who has not progressed in many competitions and selections over the years. It really is a subjective process and not by any means the definitive judgment of your work.
Next year as in every year we will have new selectors, so it is always worthwhile to try again next year. There are also many local satellite groups that will be hosting exhibitions so there are always opportunities to show your work outside of the Annual Exhibition. You are of course very welcome to come to the private view and to visit the exhibition itself which will be shown in the last 2 weeks of October at the Strand Gallery. If you would like to continue to be involved in the exhibition this year we are looking for volunteers to help with hanging, private view and gallery sitting. It is a great way to learn more about LIP and the exhibition itself and also a terrific way to meet other LIP members. If you would like to volunteer please email me directly at exhibitions@londonphotography.org.uk
The images selected for the second print round are below. Note: Remember that you named your image files with your LIP Membership Number, "dash" sequence number for the anonymous selection process - images are listed as named. If you cannot remember which images are which, please email John to enquire, and see below the list for what to do next:

Selectors
We are thrilled to have the following selectors this year:
WAYNE FORD
Wayne Ford is former Design Director of Haymarket Business Media, responsible for the overall creative direction, development and brand identity of the group’s 30 plus brands, across offices in London and Hong Kong; and an art director of The Observer’s award winning colour magazine. Wayne now runs his own design studio, working across the gamut of visual communication, design strategy and management, in both print and digital channels. His interest in photography is both personal and professional. As an art director he has worked with some of the biggest names in the business, and helped launch the careers of many others. On a personal level he is a collector. He is a member of D&AD, the Typographic Circle, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
HOMER SYKES
Homer is a professional magazine and portrait photographer with many years experience. His principal commissions in Britain were for the "weekend colour supplements" such as The Telegraph, The Sunday Times, The Observer, You and the Sunday Express magazines. He has covered weekly news for Newsweek, Time, and the former Now! magazine, covering conflicts in Israel, Lebanon, and Northern Ireland, as well as general news in the UK. Alongside his commercial asignments, Homer has also worked on personal documentary projects including documenting traditional British folklore customs from 1970-77, which resulted in the publication Once a Year, Some Traditional British Customs (Gordon Fraser). Homer is the author, and co-author-photographer of eight books about Britain as well as Shanghai Odyssey (Dewi Lewis Publishing) and On the Road Again (Mansion Editions). The latter, his American project, was started in 1969 while Homer was at college. The photographic road trip was repeated in 1971, the work then put away for thirty years, and in 1999 and 2001 he traveled again by Greyhound bus, documenting the ‘down home’ idiosyncrasy of everyday middle America. In 2002 he set up his one-man band self-publishing concern Mansion Editions which to date has published On the Road Again and Hunting with Hounds. As an award-winning photographer he has never been busier, managing his extensive archive and shooting stuff that interests him. Homer's work is in many private and national collections. He has been a Visiting Lecturer at the London College of Communication (University of the Arts London) for over ten years, taking group and one to one tutorials with MA and BA students studying Photojournalism and Documentary photography. homersykes.photoshelter.com
HELEN TROMPETELER
