During the last week of the Walthamstow Dogs in 2008 I took a series of portrait photographs of staff, dog-trainers and people from the crowd.

The portraits were captured with a medium format film camera using a tripod and a long exposure. Working like this slows down the picture-taking process: it takes time to set up the camera, tripod and compose the photograph. My subjects often start concentrating on what Im doing which helps create intense portraits.

I like to think this series of photos also captures the mood of the evening – one of sadness at the stadium’s imminent demise.

Portraits from the Stadium is part of the E17 Art Trail 2010: 10 days; 120 venues; 200 exhibitions and over 1200 artists and contributors.

‘First Impressions’ is a solo exhibition of black and white hand prints by Joe Bowes.

These powerful and evocative images convey the full drama of their subjects in a way that only black and white imaging can. They stir up the emotion of a landscape in the viewer without the need for colour, leaving the individual with their own impression and view of each scene produced in this ‘nostalgic’ medium.

Travel around the wild and free northern areas of Britain has enlivened the photographers’ enthusiasm and passion for his art and he has, in recent years, successfully exhibited and sold his work widely. All the images are captured on film using medium format cameras and developed and printed in a traditional darkroom. The use of black and white film and ‘wet’ printing the images on archival fibre based paper give the prints a certain quality and feel that is not easily matched.

The Silent Room Gallery is proud to announce its first exhibition, a photographic installation by the emerging Polish artist-photographer Karolina Maria Dudek. Dudek’s work challenges the orthodoxy of photography as a two-dimensional medium for representation of the instant, and, in artistic tradition, seeks to explore a reality existing in the imagination, behind the here-and-now. By creating installations, the third dimension presented by the gallery space becomes an element in her work, inviting the viewer to their own interpretation of the confluence of her work’s meaning, the space and reality. The subject of her work is the human being or their absence in the world.

Hate is part of an ongoing work, Faces, which explores the face as an identity key, just as a bar-code identifies a consumer product. As an identity code, the face in portrait representation can be digitally manipulated from multiple sources, for example by juxtaposing different people’s portraits, or sampling portraits across the human lifespan. In Hate, Dudek seeks to identify her own loss of innocence, and studies her own face as she contemplates or expresses disgust or hatred of the world.
