The show will feature 13 local members exhibiting work that represents, or has been inspired by a piece of literature. This may be a quote, a line from a poem, lyrics from a song or anything broadly connected to ‘the written word’. Pictorial expressions and visual interpretations of the feelings and meanings of a simple phrase. It will be a chance to see a diverse and evocative body of work from the established and local Queens Park Satellite Group.

Index7 showcases the work of seven visual artists and photographers who have graduated from Central St Martins’ postgraduate photography course over recent years. The course, which had its final show at the art school’s iconic Charing Cross Road building in June, gained a reputation for promoting emerging talent, with graduates going on to win major awards. The exhibition is part of Photomonth 2011.

Paul Vickery’s practice is concerned with Western culture’s obsession with image, identity and the contradictory nature of the human condition. His project Past Imperfect Future Tense focuses on people who desire to be visible but are often viewed as outsiders in ‘normal’ society. The work highlights that coming to terms with confusion and contradiction are perhaps the final things we have to deal with as human beings.

Mary Pritchard’s solo show features huge hand-coloured images of ancient heritage trees which all have stories and legends attached to them. These tree portraits aim to capture the personality of these ‘green monuments’ and their long interaction with humanity. Who knows what momentous dramas these craggy faces have witnessed throughout their lives?

Alongside these tree portraits will be atmospheric images taken with a hand-made pinhole camera of journeys through England and further afield. ‘Counting Elephants’ refers to the method Mary uses to calculate the exposure times required with the pinhole camera, and is also the title of a series of tiny hand-made books of these journeys. Mary also works as a ceramicist and will show her ‘organic’ porcelain paperclay sculptures and vessels. www.marypritchard.net

Martina and Celine have photographs show in the Open Here exhibition as part of the 21st Annual Hereford Photography Festival. Martina’s work is a selection from her series Suites on the World Trade Center in New York, while Celine shows prints from her Swimmers series photographed at the Serpentine.

Work from 22 photographers was selected from over 300 submissions from across the globe, by panel judges Caitlin Griffiths, Artistic Director of HPF; Nina Gustavsson, photographer and tutor at Hereford College of Arts; Melissa DeWitt editor of HotShoe, and Simon Bainbridge editor of BJP.

The Crossing Lines Annual Show features an eclectic review of members’ work, curated by Johannes Rigal. Casting urban space as gateway, theatre, evocation, entrance, exit and route, Crossing Lines is an open and ongoing creative collaboration between LIP members and the Centre for Urban and Community Research (CUCR) at Goldsmiths.

‘It’s Not Curry’ presents images from Kathryn’s 3rd visit to India in 2011. After working as a photographer and travelling extensively through the country, the diversity in culture, language, religion, environment and ‘way of life’ have become more and more apparent. This selection of images represents a unique perspective not synonymous with Western ideas of India and Indian food.

Marina Misiti exhibits a series of ten photographs that are part of her ongoing iPhoneography project Rome-by-bus 87/70 (previously exhibited in Brooklyn NY at Callahan Gallery, March 2011) alongside another photographer and an artist in this show “Strati Velati”.

Marina’s photographs from her book Rome-by-bus 87/70 (through iPhone) present Rome from the point of view of looking out a bus window, revealing unusual details, different lights and colors, to re-invent and celebrate a very idiosyncratic map of the Eternal City — far beyond the well known, traditional postcard views.
