Alicia ClarkeAs a photographer I am concerned with concepts of identity and the body. I believe that any portrait or image of the body becomes a cultural site where the conflicting concerns of agency, representation and the viewer's consumption come into play. I have always been aware of the fluidity of identity, and of the ways in which the individual is constructed through a mix of external social pressures and internal desires. In particular, I am interested in the representation of gender and sexuality and am currently exploring this through staged portrait photography. The action of sitting for a portrait is performative in itself, so what visual clues are at play? How much does the sitter 'perform' or conceal their identity and what does this reveal about the performance of gender within society itself? In my commissioned editorial, advertising and PR work I continue working within the themes of identity and the body shooting portraiture and dance photography for commercial clients.
