Ellie Davies

My work is concerned with exploring the characterizations of space as safe and unsafe, and the delineations between inside and outside, the seen and the unseen. Earlier work depicted figures in urban spaces, homes and gardens, watching or being watched. In the recent series "Silent, Dark and Deep" and "Islands" the figures are gone, but the sense of a space weighted with a potentiality remains. The notion of the boundary is always present; architectural and rural spaces depict the fine line between light and shadow, beauty and danger, the precarious balance between reality and a constructed visual fantasy, and the strangeness that is hidden beneath the surface of the commonplace.
