Earlier this year the question was raised: how do we know what’s a great photograph & what’s a might-have-been? Holly Stevenson (LIP mag Summer 2008) said: by looking at the work of great photographers. Quelle horreur! Good idea! So let’s do it.

The idea is this …Holly will lead out the session with the photographers & their photographs that have influenced her & we take off with those that have inspired, surprised, animated, shaped, touched our spirit & knocked our socks off.

So … for one month only, bring someone else’s pics—any format … a cutting, book, folio, magazine, print, catalogue, postcard by ‘the great & the good’. This century, last century or the one before that. Talk about them if you want to or just bring ‘em along for us to admire.

Holly, very conveniently, is part of the new exhibition at Viewfinder & she’ll be telling us something about her approach to photography & her current work with tableaux vivants.

Something for all the family.

From Ruislip Station: Walk straight out of station past the buses. Turn left and then right at traffic lights into Ruislip High Street. Walk right down the High Street until you get to Cafe Rouge. Take the left fork at the mini roundabout and walk past the Harvester. Then turn left into Sharps Lane. 29 is 125 yards down on the left.

From West Ruislip Station: Turn right out of station and cross the road at the crossing. Continue away from the station down the hill passing a row of shops on your right. You will also pass a petrol station on your right. After about 400 yards you will reach a roundabout. Take the first left into Sharps Lane. At the T junction (after about 200 yards) turn right – this is still Sharps Lane – we are 100 yards down on the right.”

The moment of The First Greenwich Annuale has (more-or-less) arrived. For a brief but perfectly-judged moment in August the Viewfinder will be given over to the work of (at the final count) thirty-four of our group. The opening bash is on the evening of Wednesday 20th. August from 6.30pm until 8.30pm & it would be just fine & dandy if you can make it along to the viewing.

So … our regular monthly meetup has moved from the Tuesday (hanging day) to the Wednesday for just this month. If it’s been some time since we’ve seen you in Greenwich it would be great to have you along along so we can reacquaint. If you’re a complete stranger to us then remain so no longer.

At a loose end? There’ll be masses of special people around, fine photography, a stunning sunset, just-cut fashions, individually-wrapped crisps.

We hope to have a lively meeting. Last month’s meeting included discussion on the use of image galleries to sell photographs, processing and image scanning. At the June meeting will will be planning a photographic day out that will include a visit to an exhibition in addition to image taking opportunities.
