The topic for our May meeting was current projects. These included long term projects which had been in development for years and which were still going and shorter term one-off projects which were now complete.

Chris showed a series of images about the rubbish which accumulates in telephone boxes – many old phone boxes now seem to be used as bins. Jan looked at how animation and video can be used to add another dimension to still images. He was interested in particular in how video could promote images which were being shown in an exhibition. Steve gave us a poignant series of images of wayside memorials to victims of traffic accidents. The cards and flowers hinted at relationships but with enough ambiguity for the viewer to make their own story.

Simon showed a range of abstracts based on the shapes of grass dancing in the wind. These were about glorying in pure shape rather than trying to tell a story. Geoff presented new work from two established series – Decay and The Distributed Presence of the Natural World, the latter showing the world as though it were shown in the Red Green Blue (RGB) code used in web applications. Peter gave us images from three long term projects – Robin Hood Gardens, Balfron Tower and cross-London walk from east to west. Anna’s project used images of an out of season seaside resort in Devon to explore her feelings about the death of a friend. Finally Edith showed some examples of street photography done on a course at the Hayward Gallery around the Diane Arbus exhibition.
