Central London Group October Meeting

The annual books session. Most of us bring books which have been some influence on us or have given interest or pleasure. Some bring their own book works. This time we had one clutch of family albums, a set of meticulously made pop-up books and a book meditating on the strangeness of a decaying house in Fitzroy Street. The influencers included a set of b&w photos by the American abstract painter Ellsworth Kelly, a book on the Japanese concept of wabi sabi – the value of imperfections, the delicate work of Claire Yaffa (‘Light and Shadow’), Laura Rosen’s ‘Manhattan Shores’ (exactly what it said), the work of Helen Cammock, a selection of Cecil Beaton’s portraits and another of Soviet bus stops, Ian Berry’s early colour supplement photos, the humanist architectural photography of John Donat, and the Weizmans’ account of the history and purposes of before-and-after photography.
