Central London Group: Chance would be a fine thing

The Central London satellite group of London Independent Photography celebrates its second anniversary with a group show at the Art Pavilion in Mile End where 13 photographers explore the waywardness of chance. Participating LIP members are Brendan Delaney, Teresa Levitt, Hugh Look, Peter Luck, Heather Martin, Ingrid Newton, Katrin Nodop, Stefanie Reichelt, Krystina Stimakovits, Edith Templeton, Chris Tribble and Ariadne van de Ven.

Despite current trends for staged or constructed imagery, one of photography’s joys has always been its susceptibility to chance. As photographers, we choose the subject matter, select the aperture and shutter speed, carefully frame the composition, maybe wait for hours; but the moment the shutter is released chance becomes part of the process. An expression or gesture changes, the sun appears or disappears, a figure crosses our field of vision. The serendipitous moment then becomes ‘a fine thing’ indeed.
