British & American Photography: The Post-Romantic Tradition
Victoria & Albert Museum, London
This six-week picture-based course consists of two elements taught on the same afternoon: a fully-developed lecture on an individual photographer, complemented by a practical print seminar on his or her work and that of other artists in the same broad tradition, drawing upon the rich resources of the V& A Print Collections and the National Art Library. The major figures are Julia Margaret Cameron, Frederick H. Evans, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand and Ansel Adams.
The course is taught by Dr Mike Weaver, Emeritus Fellow, Linacre College, Oxford University, in collaboration with Dr Anne Hammond, Centre for Fine Print Research, University of the West of England, former co-editors of the journal History of Photography (1991-2000), who have published books or major articles on all of the photographers named above.
