Last month’s theme of Accidental prompted the usual varied response from our members. There were examples of happy accidents – of composition, exposure, and focus as well as unexpected elements within the frame. There were also examples of more deliberate accidents (possibly an oxymoron!) such as shooting blind and moving the camera, where the result is not under the control of the photographer. It was generally agreed that we are not always aware of everything in the frame until we look at the result afterwards and that often the unforeseen element, like the ‘punctum’ described in Roland Barthes’ book Camera Lucida, is what makes the photograph work on a deeper level.

Our next meeting will take place on Wednesday 13th August 2014 at 18.45 at the usual venue – The Artworkers Guild, 6 Queens Square, Bloomsbury, London WC1N 3AT.
To coincide with the summer holidays the theme for the evening will be Journey. This could be a physical journey – from your daily commute to a round-the world trip, and everything inbetween. Alternatively it could be a metaphorical journey such as life as a journey or different stages of your life. Feel free to interpret as creatively as you wish! Please bring along any work you would like to share. Prints or digital images on a memory stick please – maximum of 10 images.
We are also giving notice of our September meeting where we will be presenting an Anonymous Slideshow of members’ work, followed by a discussion and critique. We staged a similar slideshow some years ago and it proved to be very popular – the ability to give constructive criticism without knowing the identity of the photographer can result in a more honest appraisal! If you would like to take part in the slideshow please send two images of your choice (obviously not ones you have shown before) to Ingrid Newton ingridanewton@gmail.com. There are no special requirements regarding filenames. Please resize your images to the following dimensions:
1280 pixels on the longest side
72 dpi
Quality 100%
Adobe RGB
Deadline for submissions is Monday 1st September.
