A fine selection of portraits was on show at last month’s meeting – some taken in the studio, some in natural light, some environmental portraits of people going about their business. We also had still life images where an assemblage of objects conjured up a personal portrait of an unseen character. There was discussion about the nature of a portrait – does a portrait have to show the face or can a back view of a person be classed as a one? Does a portrait have to be posed or can it be a shot of someone taken in passing? What everyone agreed on was the necessity of putting the subject at ease – don’t ask them to hold a pose whilst you fuss about correct exposure or composition!
