Sara had moved to Vancouver just as lock-downs started so, being largely confined, working this time in colour, she photographed from the windows of her flat as she had done on previous arrivals in Deptford and Montreal, taking in changes in season, weather, light, viewing down into the street or towards the city, to build up a view of a close locality.
Peter had also moved home between lock-downs, arriving in the New Town district of Dartford which, although contiguous with London, is in Kent and has a history as an independent town. His photos, mostly in B&W and various formats followed his exploration of streets immediately around his house and some of the ways to the town centre, some aspects of the town form perhaps becoming evident.
Sara’s photos of a multi-storey district, apparently built within a short span of time, prompted the question of whether a place has a personality, and if so, would photos make that evident? Both photographers produced images empty of people (until Peter closed his set in the High Street). In Dartford New Town this is typical of much of the day, lockdown or no lockdown; people are away working. Although Peter’s variety of formats and occasional colour were questioned (he would claim this was not a project, more a collection of getting-to-know photos) most questions seemed to be about understanding the urban through photography rather than photography in itself. Fair enough.
