Tony Othen’s portrait of Ted Hughes – a fairly reluctant Ted Hughes, it seems – provoked much discussion particularly about his hand positioning, a discussion that was accompanied by various attempts to copy it. Of the gesture, Dr Anna Skea (a researcher and fan of the poet) has written:
I know how superstitious he was about having his photograph taken …
I then pondered on the strange, un-natural way he was holding his hands and realised that it was a mano fico – an old, magical hand position for attracting the evil eye, so protecting himself.
I presented a selection of street photography concentrating on the posture, expression, attitude, demeanour, actions… of various individuals encountered whilst wandering around London (a small selection, there are a lot of people in London). The features image was shot in Nashville.
