Ian Phillips McLaren grew up watching his father taking photographs as references for his many paintings. Though McLaren’s best subject in school was art, he did not follow in his father’s footsteps, he alternatively became a nightclub DJ. In 1985 he purchased a camera, a Pentax ME Super and so began his interest in photography. He then went on to a successful career as a commercial photographer, being hired to photograph a wide range of subjects.
After a time, the superficial glamour of a commercial life began to wear thin and McLaren began to explore his own creative potential. McLaren creates stunning experimental landscapes with layers of water colour pigment or by making gum bichromate prints alongside many other areas of interesting alternative photography practices. Be it his intimate and touching work on dementia, an experimental self portrait or even still compositions of pears, Ian Phillips McLaren’s deeply sensitive work will inspire you to try new techniques and rethink how you view the final object.
