    This evening’s speaker, Jenny Matthews, lives in Hackney, East London where she has been working on a long-term project documenting life in the borough’s vibrant community.
    Matthews is a documentary photographer and filmmaker working on issues of dispossession and human rights with a particular emphasis on the lives of women and girls.
    Since 1982, she has worked all over the world on editorial assignments, covering momentous historical events including the guerrilla war and Independence of Eritrea, the Sandinistas in Nicaragua and the genocide in Rwanda. Her work has been commissioned and published in a wide range of international magazines including Marie Claire, Guardian Weekend magazine, The Sunday Times, The Independent Magazine, Night and Day magazine and the Independent on Sunday Review.
    This photographer has also done a substantial amount of work with development organisations including Save the Children, Action Aid, Oxfam, Christian Aid and Sight Savers, particularly in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia.
    Matthews’ book Women and War chronicling 20 years of women worldwide affected by conflict was published in 2003 by Mets and Shilt in Holland, Pluto Press in the UK and University of Michigan in the US. The book was short-listed for the John Kobal book award and was highly commended.
    The exhibition ‘Women and War’ was shown in London, Newcastle, Wales and Nottingham from 2003 to 2004. The exhibition was also shown at The Imperial War Museum and at St Mungo’s Museum in Glasgow in 2005.
    Jenny Matthews is working on a second volume entitled ‘Stories of Love and War’ as well as working with her beautiful photo quilts that incorporate her photography into tangible and thought -provoking objects.
