Vandyke Printing Workshop
Saturday 6 January 2024
12 noon to 4pm
Location: Old Diorama Arts Centre, 201 Drummond Street, Regents Place, London NW1 3FE
Spaces Available: 8
Cost: £30 per person
Vandyke is an iron and silver nitrate, based contact-printing method, first credited to Sir John Herschel in 1842. The process was named after the Flemish Baroque painter, Anthony Van Dyke – it produces earth tones, black, sepia and brown, reminiscent of his palette. Vandyke brown prints are very simple and economical to make, with the sensitizer consisting of three readily available chemicals. Images are converted into digital negatives, printed using a laser jet printer, on transparency film and contact printed/exposed to UV light and developed/fixed using water and sodium thiosulfate (hypo).
During the workshop you will:
• Receive the recipe and instructions to make your own Vandyke light sensitive emulsion at home (once mixed, the solution must sit in a dark place for several days before use).
• Learn the process and make your own Vandyke prints using a variety of precoated papers.
In preparation for the workshop you’ll receive information from Jo about how to produce your own digital negatives to use during the session. Due to the light sensitive nature of coated Vandyke paper, the workshop will take place in low/subdued light.
This workshop is now fully subscribed. If you are interested in a possible future workshop or like to be on the reserve list please contact Jo Stapleton directly groups@londonphotography.org.uk
