Tuesday, December 12: Winchester and the Christmas market day trip
Unfortunately, due to potential train strikes, the Winchester day trip will now be on Tuesday, Dec 12. We hope those who had already signed up can still make it, and maybe others can come too. Information about the walk, train times and costs are below. You might consider booking your ticket for the cathedral in advance.
Discover the cathedral city of Winchester on this photo day trip with Eve Milner. You’ll walk from the station down into the city via the historic West Gate, to the picturesque River Itchen, and along its banks to view the Bishop’s Palace, Winchester School, and the house where Jane Austen died. You may visit the cathedral, one of largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe and home to some of the finest medieval wood carvings in Britain. We will all visit the (free) Christmas market, modelled on the German Christmas markets and set in around the cathedral grounds. You will have free time to wander and eat/drink according to your preferences.
Costs: Saturday 9 December, National Rail are currently showing outbound at 1005 arriving at 1104 for £8.35 with a Senior Rail Card, and return at 1748 or 1818 arriving Waterloo at 1849 and 1912 respectively for £5.70. The Cathedral charges £10pp entry for a group booking (group must be 10+), £10pp for anyone over 66 as an individual booking, and £12.50 for anyone under 66.
