Terence Lane – Sciryuda

    © Terence Lane FRPS

Terence Lane FRPS, is a self-taught photographer based in Nottinghamshire, England who has been photographing ‘Sciryuda’ (Sherwood Forest) for many years. ‘Sciryuda’ was the first documented name for the forest, given by the Vikings during the Danelaw over 1000 years ago. Although his subject matter features trees at every stage of their lifecycle, the work is more about a forest where his ancestors worked the land, above and below including the forest and farmland around Byron’s ancestral home, Newstead. The work and resulting images are not documentary, they are personal, his experiences connecting the here and now with the past and the future with obvious and subtle metaphor. Mainly timeless, the images are not fomulaic and more often than not they are the result of meditations, acknowledging Sciryuda’s past, it’s fragility and strength, it’s journey, and the connection to the activities of his ancestors.

Curated by, Abi Spinks, ‘Sciryuda’ is a solo exhibition but forms part of the ‘Forest’ season of exhibitions and events taking place at Nottingham Castle and Newstead Abbey during the summer of 2025.
