Sarah Ainslie: ‘Drifting Across the Peripheries of an Urban Landscape’

You’re My Angel, © Sarah Ainslie

An exhibition of Photographs, Photomontages and Concertinas. In 2018 I started wandered along the Thames from Limehouse to Tilbury documenting the liminal peripheries of London where urban and rural life collide, a disappearing, endlessly changing landscape, so close to the city where vast monuments to late capitalism clash with the detritus of abandoned industry and traces of human life.

These walks were also part of a search for answers about my own colonial ancestors. I found an unstructured way of being, jumping back, moving forward, seeing something on the periphery of my vision and layering one moment’s observation upon another, using photomontage and making concertina books to create a way of piecing together this sense of dis- location.
