Outer Capital brings together photographs from a two-year collaborative project by Vicinity, a collective of ten documentary photographers based in London. The group met through the city’s photographic institutions and turned that into an ongoing collaboration: monthly walks, each dedicated to one of the twenty Outer London boroughs created by the London Government Act of 1963.
Together, Vicinity photographed high streets, shopping centres, car parks, markets, estates and parks across all twenty boroughs, building a collective portrait of places rarely pictured in our shared idea of London. The resulting images capture ordinary routines, chance encounters and fleeting moments — the diversity of a city that exists as much beyond its old county boundary as within it.
The exhibition is staged as a journey through these places, with no prescribed route: visitors are free to wander, echoing the walks themselves.
