Zelda Cheatle opened her gallery in 1989, after a decade at the Photographers Gallery. She
exhibited photography nationally and internationally for 16 years. The gallery showed
countless 20th century photographers including Eve Arnold , Mari Mahr and Robert Frank.
The Zelda Cheatle Gallery also consistently exhibited emerging artists and photographers,
whilst working with those established in the medium. The Galleries sister company, Zelda
Cheatle Press, also published monographs of contemporary British artists and photographers.
Cheatle began and managed the first Photography Fund which primarily collected fine prints
of the 20th Century. The Fund also exhibited and published the collection of over 6,000
iconic prints including a Russian 20th century collection, Eve Arnold’s vintage archive and
icons and masterpieces of the European and American schools.
This expert in photography has also authored a number of introductions for photographer’s
books and exhibitions including Hackney by Night by David George, and Mother River by
Yan Wang Preston.
Since 2014 Zelda Cheatle has been a visiting lecturer at Central St Martins, Kingston University, University of Ulster Belfast, Sotheby’s Institute, (formerly) The Cass School of Art, University of West London, London College of Communication, UAL, Northampton
University, University of Ulster , Belfast, University of Brighton, and has been invited by the University of Westminster to review and edit portfolios for final year students as well as mentoring recent graduates and a collective group of professional photographers for Red Eye in Manchester.
Zelda Cheatle’s latest book The Photograph that Changed My Life was published by
ArtCinema in Autumn 2021. Her latest exhibition Squaring the Circles at The Royal
Photographic Society (opening April 2022) features 8 amazing photographers including 5 of
our past LIP speakers Ian McLaren, Takashi Arai, Joy Gregory, David George and Tom
Hunter. Zelda is currently curating an international Festival in Saudi Arabia, Jeddah Photo
opens in February and runs until April 2022.
The main exhibition features 14 artists, of which Monica Alcazar Duarte, Laura El Tantawy,
Awoiska van der Molen, Manal Al Dowayan, Marwah Al Marchait, Sara Naim, Susan
Derges and Yan Wang Preston are included.
