About

Welcome to London Independent Photography's 29th Annual Exhibition!

The LIP Annual Exhibition, now in its 29th year, provides a platform for members to exhibit their best work to be shared with a wider public audience. This year our new submission process is designed to include more members than ever in the exhibition!

A series of talks and events will feature throughout the exhibition period, with leading figures from the photographic world including: Dewi Lewis the celebrated photobook publisher; Simon Roberts, an outstanding landscape photographer with an emphasis on human geography; Tanya Houghton, presenting her project ‘A Migrant’s Tale’ - a collection of narrative explorations told through the language of food; a panel discussion on 'The Street Today', and more.

The exhibition and associated events will attract a huge audience and will be a great showcase for LIP members.

NEW VENUE FOR 2017! The Old Truman Brewery

The Old Truman Brewery is the hub of East London's revolutionary arts and media quarter, home to a hive of creative businesses as well as independent shops, galleries, markets, bars and restaurants. For over twenty years the Old Truman Brewery has been regenerating its ten acres of vacant and derelict buildings.

Submissions

Submissions are now closed

This year ALL members who submitted will have at least one print displayed (provided print(s) are of a satisfactory technical quality).

We go to great lengths to ensure that image selections are conducted anonymously, and having independent selectors is the fairest way to choose representative photographic works by our members. Each year we ask independent professionals who are connected to London’s photographic community (but not members of LIP) to conduct the selection process. See below for this year's selectors.

Works will be exhibited in the following three categories:

1. The Highlighted Photographer

A single photographer the selectors consider to have the most outstanding work, highlighted with a dedicated wall space.

2. Special Merit

Images considered to be of special merit, with one print from each selected photographer displayed prominently throughout the gallery.

3. General

An important group display showcasing the diversity and range of photographic works produced by members of London Independent Photography. All members who entered will have at least one print displayed.

About the Selectors

We are delighted to have the following selectors for 2017:

ALEX BAMFORD
Alex is a photographer with 30 years of experience as an advertising art director, creating national and global campaigns for brands including Land Rover, Volkswagen, Bacardi, M&S, Vodafone, Lloyds Bank and Virgin Atlantic. Alex has been photographing by moonlight for the last 10 years, mainly in and around Brighton, but also as far away as Japan, South Africa and Chile, and has extensively exhibited his thought provoking work.

GEMMA BARNETT
Gemma is Director of the Print Sales Gallery at The Photographers' Gallery. The Print Sales Gallery represents thirty-five British and International photographers including such acclaimed photographers as Sebastiao Salgado, Elliott Erwitt, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Shirley Baker, Mari Mahr, Weegee, Simon Roberts, Julie Cockburn, Luke Stephenson and Tom Butler.

JULIA FULLERTON-BATTEN
Julia is a worldwide acclaimed and exhibited fine-art photographer. Her body of work now encompasses twelve major projects spanning a decade of engagement in the field. Julia’s use of unusual locations, highly creative settings, street-cast models, accented with cinematic lighting are hallmarks of her very distinctive style of photography. She insinuates visual tensions in her images, and imbues them with a hint of mystery, which combine to tease the viewer to re-examine the picture, each time seeing more content and finding a deeper meaning. Fullerton-Batten has won countless awards for both her commercial and fine-art work, and is a Hasselblad Master. She was commissioned by The National Portrait Gallery in London to shoot portraits of leading people in the UK National Health Service. These are now held there in a permanent collection. Other images are also in permanent collection at the Musee de l'Elysee, Lausanne, Switzerland.
